Are you looking for solar panel mounting options for your home?
Solar panel and clean energy have become the subject of much discussion in today’s society. An increasing number of both businesses and individual households are making the switch to sustainable power options, meaning solar energy has soared in popularity in recent years— and this trend will only continue to grow. After all, solar panels are an investment that tends to pay itself off, saving you money on your energy bills and helping reduce your CO2 emissions in the long run.
If you have ever even considered switching to clean energy, it is likely that you already know a lot about solar power itself. However, you may not have heard of solar panel roof mounts, never mind your different mounting options.
The truth is, solar panel roof mounts are an important area of innovation in the solar market. Typically made from aluminium or stainless steel, they help provide the necessary support for your solar panels even in harsh weather conditions. Knowing the differences between solar panel rooftop mounting structures can help you make the right decision for your property if you decide to make the switch.
To begin with, there are many advantages to solar panel roof mounts, including:
So solar panel roof mounts are a great choice for those looking to switch to solar power in a stress-free and budget-friendly way, but did you know there are various mounting systems you can choose from?
This type of rooftop mounting structure is typically found in residential areas. There are three popular solar panel mounting options for sloping roofs: railed, rail-less and shared rail.
With the railed solar panel mounting system, a series of rails are attached to the roof by bolts or screws to hold up the panels. On the other hand, in rail-less systems, the solar panels are attached to the hardware that is directly connected to the roof via bolts or screws. An advantage of this is that due to the lack of rails, manufacturing and shipping costs are lower. Lastly, in shared rail structures a rail is removed so two rows of panels end up on a shared middle rail.
What type of sloped solar panel roof mount is right for you will depend on the size, sturdiness and individual characteristics of your roof.
Flat solar panel roof mounts are most commonly found on commercial and industrial properties, as these often have large and flat rooftops. Fortunately, due to the large and level surface, flat rooftop solar panel mounting structures are fairly easy and quick to install, with much of the work being completed before installation. Unlike the mounts found on residential properties, flat roof mounting systems are sometimes plastic or polymer based, rather than steel and aluminium. The lightweight properties of these materials make them perfect for a quick and easy installation.
Ballasted non-penetrating solar panel roof mounts are not unusual for flat roof designs. These are ‘draped’ over the peak of the roof so the system’s weight is evenly distributed. Ballast is generally used to provide stability. As there are no screws and bolts drilling into the roof, installation for this type of solar panel rooftop mounting structure can be very quick. In some cases, when a roof is too weak to support much weight, penetration may still be needed.
Technically, solar shingles aren’t a mounting system, rather, they completely remove the need for other solar panel mounting options all together! Solar shingles are a type of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), meaning they are built into the roof structure. They are integrated into the roof itself, acting as the roofing material and providing a source of energy.
With an increased focus on aesthetics and convenience, solar shingles are likely to rise in popularity in future years. As opposed to other solar mounting options, their main advantage is that they are aesthetically appealing and discreet. However, it is important to note that installing solar shingles is almost always more costly than traditional solar panels.
