How Solar Works?

STEP 1:
Solar Panels convert sunlight to energy

Solar panels receive sunlight during the day which they convert to energy. A solar power system requires direct sunlight, not just daylight to operate efficiently. The sunlight triggers a chemical reaction in the panels through the photovoltaic effect, and as a result, direct current (DC) energy is generated.

STEP 2:
Solar Inverter converts from DC to AC electricity

The inverter then converts the solar panel’s DC electricity to Alternating current (AC) electricity which is what we use in our house.

STEP 3:
Switchboard directs solar energy to your home

The power from the inverter then travels to your switchboard which is connected to all the power within your house. You are now using your solar energy generated from the solar panels.

STEP 4:
Electricity Meter

Once solar is installed your meter will be replaced with a new solar meter to measure how much power you consume from the grid and how much power you export to the grid. Solar power systems produce energy while the sun is out and if you don’t use this energy then it is sent back to the grid. The recorded electricity that is exported back to the grid can earn a “feed-in tariff”.

STEP 5:
Feed in-tariff - Grid

The power you consumes or export to the grid is measured in kilowatt (kWH) hours. If your system is producing more energy than what your home is using it will send energy back to the grid and your selected electricity retailer will pay you a rate per kWH for the electricity you export to the grid. This is known as your feed-in tariff. As there are many retailers on the market it is best to research which one will give you the best rate.
